Rumbletums AGM is a time when we can look back over the previous year and take stock of all that has happened and been achieved. This year we will be holding our AGM on Monday 6th August at pm. You are most welcome to join us and celebrate a year in the life of Rumbletums.
Rumbletums celebrated its 7th birthday on 2nd July and held a birthday party in the cafe on Saturday 6th.
It was a time for looking back on what the project has achieved since its inception in 2011, with friends old and new and for looking forward to, hopefully, the next seven years. But Chair of Trustees, Derek Gardiner, also had to reveal a new challenge now facing Rumbletums and its supporters.
This is his statement:
As you may know, since Rumbletums first opened on 2nd July 2011, the Victoria Street premises have been rented from the owners of the building, the East Midlands Baptist Trust Company. For the seven years that Rumbletums has used this building, we have benefited from a low rent in return for maintaining and developing the building. During that time we have provided a range of valuable services, not only to our trainees but to the wider community.
However, the Baptist Trust Company decided, when our lease was last renewed, that they would sell the building at the end of the lease period. This will be in June 2019. We now know that the sale price will be £200,000. Although Rumbletums has been given first refusal on buying the premises, it will be difficult to raise this amount of money in the timescale set down by the EMBTC, although we will obviously put as much effort in as possible to secure the necessary funds and are looking at a variety of ways of trying to raise the money.
We have investigated alternative premises and will continue to do so, but, at the moment, there are none that are suitable for our needs locally or that are within our budget. We are also hoping to hold discussions with EMBTC to see if there are any alternative arrangements we can come to.
Sadly, if all these attempts fail, it is likely that Rumbletums will have to close. This is an outcome that, of course, none of us wants.
So it is not yet a done deal and we will work hard to ensure the future of the project, but it would be wrong of the trustees not to inform all those associated with Rumbletums of the facts and of the difficult position we are now in.
Our first consideration in all of this will be our trainees and staff and we will ensure that everyone is informed as things progress, so that timely decisions can be made as necessary.
We know that we will have your support at this difficult time and we hope that by working together we will find a solution and Rumbletums will be around for another seven years.
Rumbletums are delighted to be this months recipient of the Waitrose Community Matters award of £500. Each month 3 causes are selected to go forward for voting by the public in their store and Rumbletums have come top of the poll! Thanks to all of you who voted for us whilst doing your shopping. In November 2017 we learned that our application to the Santander Foundation was successful. The grant will be used to help fund a part time member of staff which means that we can continue to offer excellent support to our trainees. Amy, Emma and Sarah went to visit the Beeston Santander branch to receive our Cheque (which is actually bigger than Amy!) Thanks so much to Santander and the lovely staff there for their generosity and warmth. We look forward to Kayleigh and Maria visiting us to see the café first hand.
Ever since Kimberley’s new Co-op opened they have been busy promoting local causes and supporting the community. Rumbletums was delighted to be picked as one of their local causes to benefit from the Co-op Community Foundation. 1% of all Co-op branded groceries was donated between 3 local causes which came to a fantastic £2,500 for us. Thanks so much to Co-op and all those dedicated shoppers! We will be using their grant to help make Rumbletums a great Café experience so look out for some improvements and refurbs in the coming months. Happy Days!
This year Rumbletums has been fortunate to have the Nottingham engineering firm LB Foster partner with us in Fund raising. We started off the year with a cake sale and made sure that the folks there got a flavour of our lovely home-made produce. The cake theme continued when, as part of Christmas jumper day, one of Derek’s gorgeous Angel Christmas cakes was raffled off to the lucky LB Foster employees. So far, they have raised a generous £344.05 for us for which we are grateful. Many thanks and more power to the engineers!!

This year very luckily we have been chosen by both Co-op and Tesco’s to potentially receive some funding.
BUT… we need your help if you shop at Local Co-op Maws Lane Branch or Tesco’s Extra in Ilkeston.
Here’s how to help if you shop at Tesco’s Ilkeston:
Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 – all raised from the 5p bag levy – being awarded to local community projects.
Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive the cash award and shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant.
Rumbletums is one of the groups on the shortlist.
Voting is open in stores throughout May and June. Customers will cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out in store each time they shop.

The latest round of Co-op Local Community Fund is now open, which means that our members can choose to give 1% of what they spend on Co-op branded products and services to your cause.
The funding for your cause will come from Co-op Members. We give 1% of everything our members spend on Co-op branded products and services to a local cause they choose – and they’ll be able to choose your cause from 9 April to 7 October 2017.
Every time our members buy Co‑op branded products and services, from buying a loaf of bread to planning a funeral, 1% of their spend goes to a local cause, like yours. For the 6 months you’re part of the fund the money builds up. Throughout the 6 months, members can choose which cause their contribution goes to.
